Music of the Week, Vol. 7

Once again, it's the Music of the Week! This time around, it's a mixture of rotten days with Wario and happy thoughts with Yoshi.

Reminder and instructions: (skip if you already know)
In the right column, under the links, you will find a player with five songs. Choose one of them and click the Play button to listen to that week's wondrous tracks! Beneath the player is a link to the corresponding post containing the download links plus their descriptions.
Please note that the downloads of previous weeks are no longer available - so be sure to check back every week if you are interested.

The Music of the Week from 25. to 30. of August is...

~Warp Zone (Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman!)
An obscure piece of software which once embarrassed the crew of Germany's most read video game magazine (long story, that) because they never heard of it, Wario Blast is actually quite fun for Bomberman fans and people who like setting themselves on virtual fire repeatedly while blaming the game engine. The game's second area, the Warp Zone, is just what any Mario fan might imagine it to be: an area full of warps. The music does remind one of nightly superheroes like Darkwing Duck, though...

~Versus (Wario's Woods)
What has the most ridiculous physics and frustrating gameplay of all Mario-related puzzle games (except maybe Wrecking Crew '98)? Exactly, it's Wario's Woods, also known as "Rejected Character Get-Together Fest With New, Stupid Villains Added". However, one thing that does actually a Tad Rock about this is the music of the SNES version, which, despite having less tracks than the average human has fingers, is pleasant to hear even throughout 99 levels of pain and Birdo.

~Perfect [Let's Get That Treasure!] (Wario Land 2 and 3)
What we're looking at here is the rare example of a total and complete song carbon copy -no remix, no instrument change, nothing to even slightly renew the (admittedly already awesome) Perfect Game song from Wario Land 2 in its sequel. The fact that it takes two and a half eternities to get to hear this song in both games doesn't make it feel less of a cheap cop-out on part of the designers instead of the precursor homage it is most likely intended to represent.

~Yoshi's Stage (Tetris Attack GB)
Yes, there was a Tetris Attack for the Game Boy, and it wasn't even bad! It provided the same block-switching and comboing experience its bigger SNES brother did, but in four colours and without fancy-schmancy moving background elements. Even the songs are as close to the (ripped-off) original as the humble chips could manage.

~Deleted Chapter (Yoshi's Story)
One does find some interesting bits (and bytes) when hacking a game's resources, and Yoshi's Story is no counterexample. Deep within the USF library, a strange and soothing chapter select tune lay hidden - is it an alternate version of Chapter 5's "Mermaid's Tears" theme? Was there, at some point, talk about a peaceful night world amongst the developers? Now, no one knows, and sadly not many care.

The Picture of the Week is the infamous Weegee, who originally stems from the awful adaptation of Mario is Missing for PC. A sample of Weegee's creepy powers:

Check back next week for more obscure/obtuse/abstruse music from the expanded Marioverse!
